Consumer SIMs are not designed for IoT
A standard mobile SIM from a consumer operator works well in a phone. It is designed for one device, one country, and a human who can respond when something goes wrong. Industrial IoT has different requirements: devices deployed in remote locations, operating unattended for years, often crossing borders, and needing reliable connectivity without manual intervention.
IoT-specific SIM cards address these requirements with features that consumer plans do not offer: multi-network roaming across hundreds of carriers, private APN for network isolation, fixed IP addresses for remote management, and centralised SIM management platforms for fleet-wide control.
Key features to evaluate
When selecting IoT SIM cards for a deployment, these are the factors that matter in practice:
- Network coverage: How many carrier networks can the SIM connect to in your deployment regions? Telenor Connexion provides access to over 500 networks in 200+ countries, which means devices can fail over to alternative carriers if one network has an outage.
- Private APN: A private Access Point Name creates an isolated tunnel between your devices and your backend systems. Traffic never touches the public internet, reducing attack surface significantly. For NIS2-covered deployments, this is effectively a requirement.
- Fixed IP / VPN: Fixed IP addresses allow you to whitelist device connections at the firewall level. Combined with VPN, this creates a secure management channel to every deployed device.
- SIM management platform: You need to be able to activate, suspend, and monitor SIMs remotely. Detecting a SIM that has stopped reporting data (or one that is consuming abnormal amounts) requires a management interface with alerting.
- Pricing model: Prepackaged data bundles work for predictable workloads. Pay-as-you-go suits variable telemetry volumes. Avoid plans with high overage charges. IoT data usage can spike during firmware updates or diagnostic sessions.

Match the SIM to the deployment
For stationary devices like energy monitoring gateways, a single-country SIM with a modest data bundle (50-100 MB/month) is usually sufficient. For fleet tracking units that cross borders, multi-country roaming with automatic carrier selection is necessary. For high-bandwidth applications like video or edge computing, evaluate whether 4G LTE is adequate or whether you need to plan for 5G coverage timelines. The right SIM depends on the use case. There is no universal answer, only a good engineering fit.
